Good Quotes on Marriage

October 4, 2009

Pastor R is doing a thoughtful series on marriage and I wanted to share these quotes, because I think they’re an excellent reminder of the nature of marriage and so I can easily find them later.

From Ann Tyler, A Patchwork Planet:

“I was beginning to suspect that it made no difference whether they’d married the right person.  Finally, you’re just with who you’re with.  You’ve signed on with her, put in half a century with her, grown to know her as well as you know yourself or even better, and she’s become the right person.  Or the only person, might be more to the point.  I wish someone had told me that earlier.  I’d have hung on then; I swear I would.  I never would have driven [her] to leave me.”

From C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity:

“The idea that ‘being in love’ is the only reason for remaining married really leaves no room for marriage as a contract or promise at all.  If love is the whole thing, then the promise can add nothing; and if it adds nothing, then it should not be made. . . .

But, of course, ceasing to be ‘in love’ need not mean ceasing to love.  Love in this second sense–love as distinct from ‘being in love’–is not merely a feeling.  It is a deep unity maintained by the will and deliberately strengthened by habit; reinforced by the grace which both ask, and receive, from God.  they can have this love for each other even at those moments when they do not like each other.  ‘Being in love’ first moved them to promise fidelity: this quieter love enables them to keep the promise.”
